The Shield of Achilles appears in the Iliad by Homer. I wanted to explore the idea of the Shield as a golden object, shimmering at us through the mists of time.  I was struck by how this story had perpetuated for over two thousand years and considered how we perceive it today.  The resulting artworks bring together three elements of the story. I used imitation gold leaf for the shield,  pale misty layers for the passage of time and finally, blue for the watery connection between Achilles and Thetis, his sea-goddess mother.  My intention is to portray the Shield's journey to us through time, to establish a connection between the genesis of the myth and the viewer.
