About my work

My work is inspired by the Welsh border landscape of my home, and aims to capture my experience of walking in its wild beauty.
My process begins with drawings and colour notes made on location then through my studio practice these initial drawings become distilled, their colours and textures explored in paint, developing a life and energy of their own. I aim to facilitate a sense of partnership with the paint. I allow my thoughts to settle, I test ideas, seeking form and context in my mark-making, that is inspired by observation, memory and experiences - yet allowing the image itself room to breathe.
The colour choices are often a mixture of observation and intuition, as I attempt to express my experience in paint, to capture and place on canvas that sublime moment that demanded a response from me. I want my images to contain the experience of their making. I try to retain the energy and dynamics of my original interest and inspiration by letting the paint flow, sometimes concealing, sometimes revealing. I am not afraid to let the materiality of the paint have the upper hand. As my paintings become more layered there is a synergy with the ancient landscape of this Border country, where history is layered beneath the land, and the ancient pathways of the Drovers and the time-worn animal tracks are veiled by the ages and revealed by man and his labours.
My aim is to reveal, with lyrical and evocative imagery, a sense of the peace and beauty of this landscape that so inspires me.
